Winter Wellness Tips from the OWU Student Health Center

1) Wear sunscreen! Contrary to what most people think, the sun is actually closer to the earth during winter, and snow and ice can reflect up to 80% of UV rays. Many face lotions contain SPF so check when you purchase these products to protect your skin.

2) The idea that you lose most of your body heat through your head is false! More heat is released via the fingertips than the head. So always wear gloves!

3) Alcohol in the cold is a dangerous thing! Most people think it warms you up, but it causes blood to rush to your skin and away from your internal organs. This means your body temperature actually lowers. Alcohol also lowers your ability to shiver, which is your body’s way of creating extra heat.
