Today — 2 Events! Speaker to Share Journey from Immigrant Farm Worker to Ph.D.

Professor and author Antonio Arreguín-Bermúdez, Ph.D., of California State University, Chico will present a lunchtime lecture and evening book reading Nov. 17, bringing to life the oppressive, dangerous, and occasionally humorous experiences of Mexican immigrant farm workers in the United States.

At 12:10 p.m. Nov. 17, Arreguín-Bermúdez will present “Finding a Life through Words and Learning: A Compelling Tale of Immigration to the U.S.” during which he discusses his own journey. His talk, presented in English, will be held in Room 301 of Merrick Hall.

From 6:30-8 p.m., Arreguín-Bermúdez will give a bilingual reading of his published collection of stories “Burnt Honey / Miel quemada” in the Bayley Room on the second floor of Beeghly Library. His collection of linked stories in his book includes the journey of 14-year-old Little Clown, a young immigrant who finds hope through language. Little Clown’s journey reflects Arreguín-Bermúdez’s own path in many ways – he also came to the United States alone, as a child, and found his way to a very different life through words and learning.
