Just as a good musical performance is energized by the silence between the notes, that same quiet interval gives a student permission to ponder. When I am in conversation with students or listening to them play their instruments, it is my total silence and complete attention on the story that I am hearing – without agenda, with no hurry to utter an interruption – that honors their story, be it verbal or musical.
Teaching tips:
Make eye contact, be still and attentive. Ask a simple prompt question. Let it sink in. Notice that a few moments of silence sings volumes.
