When returning midterm exams, try these to increase engagement and learning: provide model essays, discuss rationale for both correct/incorrect answers, have students discuss exam in groups of three or four (teach each other), give quiz for extra credit at end of review, and use a cumulative final so students have more incentive. Try metacognitive strategies so students reflect on their learning: discuss role of exams in the learning process, require students to identify patterns in correct/incorrect answer, reflect on what worked well/poorly in their prep, and consider what to do differently next time.
