You are cordially invited to a talk by Dr. Jacqueline Couti (Associate Prof. of French, University of Kentucky) on “Feminine Flame and the Pétroleuse – 20th and 21st Century (Re)writing of Lumina Sophie’s participation in the 1870 Insurrection of the South of Martinique.” An illiterate seamstress, Lumina Sophie led a group of female insurrectionists, called Pétroleuses, who burned down plantations using gasoline. Dr. Couti will explain the complexity of this figure’s renewed popularity in contemporary culture.
