Alumnus to Read from New Book, Sign Copies Sept. 6 at Willis Education Center

OWU alumnus Fred Carlisle ’56, author of the forthcoming book “Hollow and Home: A History of Self and Place,” will read from and sign copies of the book from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at Delaware City Schools’ Willis Education Center, 74 W. William St.

Carlisle, a retired English professor at Virginia Tech, previously delivered OWU’s annual Vogel Lecture, discussing his experience in “old” Delaware.” That material, including information about Ohio Wesleyan, is featured in his book along with a chapter on “new Delaware.”

According to his publishers, Carlisle’s book “explores the ways the primary places in our lives shape the individuals we become. It proposes that place is a complex and dynamic phenomenon. Place refers to geographical and constructed places – location, topography, landscape, and buildings. It also refers to the psychological, social, and cultural influences at work at a given location. These elements act in concert to constitute a place.”

According to the school district, the best way to access the Willis building is through the middle set of doors on William Street.
