Help Prepare for OWU Fire Safety Inspections

In its ongoing effort to keep our campus safe, the Delaware Fire Department will inspect OWU facilities over winter break to identify fire code violations.

To prepare for our annual inspection, please take a minute to identify and correct common violations in spaces for which you are responsible.

The following is a list of common violations in faculty, staff, and student spaces:

  1. Overloaded outlets or power strips.
  2. Daisy-chained power strips with one strip plugged into another strip.
  3. Improper use of extension cords in student sleeping rooms. (Please see Page 68 of the Student Handbook for guidance.)
  4. Unauthorized use of space heaters. Installations must be pre-approved by Buildings & Grounds to ensure building circuitry can handle the load.
  5. Propped fire doors.
  6. Blocked entrances and exits – with furniture, rubbish, etc.
  7. Blocked access to electrical and mechanical rooms. Also, it is a violation to store materials in these rooms as the stored items restrict access to electrical panels and mechanical equipment.
  8. Improper storage of items within 2 feet of ceilings.
  9. Excessive clutter on office floors, desks, and shelves. These violations are usually paper products.

If you have questions, please contact Public Safety at ext. 2222 or the B&G office at ext. 3400.

I appreciate your cooperation as we prepare for these annual inspections. Have a great break!
