Biography

Shondra E. Wygal is an Associate State Director of Outreach and Advocacy in Houston, Texas. As Associate State Director, Shondra manages AARP’s educational campaigns and outreach efforts in the greater Houston and surrounding areas. Shondra brings more than ten years of advocacy and campaign experience to AARP and has spent countless hours working on issues and political campaigns.  Her experience ranges from local/county and statewide including several national issue campaigns. She is a trained mediator and an active member in her community. Shondra currently represents AARP on the Mayor Turner’s Complete Communities Advisory Committee, Health Equity & Response COVID-19 Task Force, and a Former Commissioner on the Houston Housing Authority. She is a native of Houston and holds a certificate in Urban & Regional Planning from University of Texas, El Paso.

She is happy to provide ongoing networking support to individuals interested in Women’s Groups, Multicultural issues, or where needed:

  • Speaking with a student virtually or on the phone
  • Presenting to a student organization
  • Mentoring a student
  • Assisting OWU Alumni (recent Alumni, or Alumni in transition)
  • Serving as a resume-reviewer for OWU students and/or Alumni
  • Participating in OWU events such as speed networking, mock interviews, panels, etc.

Shondra majored in Politics & Government and Women’s Studies at OWU, and she was involved with the Women Studies Groups and Black Student Organization. She participated at WOW in 2018, on the Alumni Committee in 2019, and is a monthly donor. She is a native of Houston and holds a graduate certificate in Urban & Regional Planning from University of Texas, El Paso and a masters degree in Public Affairs from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

There are paid internship opportunities available at AARP, but students have to be active in an undergraduate or graduate program. She is happy to connect the HR department with an OWU representative.
