Colin Hawes ’20
Graduate Student Researcher – Virginia Institute of Marine Science at the College of William & MaryBiography
Colin is currently studying the potential impacts of climate change and its discrete mechanisms on hypoxia within the Chesapeake Bay. He’s conducting his research via numerical modeling, specifically the use of his lab group’s biogeochemical-hydrodynamic estuarine model of the Chesapeake Bay (St-Laurent et al., 2020; Frankel et al., 2022; Hinson et al., 2023). Colin is a 2020 OWU Graduate in Physics who was involved in Men’s Swimming, Society of Physics Students (Sigma Pi Sigma), President’s Club, Terpsicorps, Honors House, Alpha Sigma Phi, and Water Polo Club while at Ohio Wesleyan.
Colin is comfortable speaking about topics related to the graduate school application process, graduate school experience, research experience, numerical modeling, oceanography, environmental science, and physics. He is interested in supporting students studying Environmental Science, Physics, Mathematics, Biology, Zoology, and the greater OWU Community with the following:
- Speaking with a student 1:1 on campus
- Speaking with a student virtually or on the phone
- Presenting to a class in-person
- Presenting to a student organization
- Conducting a virtual webinar
- Assisting OWU Alumni (recent Alumni, or Alumni in transition)
- Serving as a resume-reviewer for OWU students and/or Alumni
- Participating in OWU events such as speed networking, mock interviewing, panels, etc.
- Hosting a “Career Trek/visit” with a group of students & OWU Staff
